Canakinumab in the Treatment of Erosive Hand Osteoarthritis: A Case Series

چکیده
Erosive hand Osteoarthritis (EOA) is a subtype of osteoarthritis (OA) which manifests as pain, swelling, redness, and warmth and is associated with radiographic changes such as central collapsing erosions and gull wing deformity. EOA eventually leads to joint deformity and ankylosis. Despite greater analgesic use, patients with EOA have worse functional outcome and more pain than those with controlled inflammatory arthritis such as Rheumatoid Arthritis or Psoriatic Arthritis [1]. Pain scores remained significantly higher in patients with erosive OA after Compared to OA of the hands, EOA “is an important cause of disability, usually compared to the handicap caused by Rheumatoid Arthritis” [2]. The proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-1 beta (IL1β) and to a lesser extent tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) play a key role in the destruction of the cartilage matrix in OA [3].

Erosive osteoarthritis: a more severe form of radiographic hand osteoarthritis rather than a distinct entity?
OBJECTIVES To determine whether erosive osteoarthritis shares the same pattern of joint involvement and risk profile as increasing grades of non-erosive hand osteoarthritis. METHODS Participants were from two population-based cohorts, aged ≥50 years, reporting hand symptoms in the previous month. Interphalangeal joints were assessed for erosive osteoarthritis (Verbruggen-Veys erosive or remod...

OBJECTIVES To investigate systemic inflammation and autoimmune response to citrullinated peptides in patients with erosive and non erosive 'lone' hand osteoarthritis (HOA) with no hip/knee involvement and their relationship with radiographic structural damage. METHODS Sera were obtained from a total of 99 patients with HOA (52 patients with erosive HOA and 47 patients with non-erosive HOA) an...
متن کاملAtypical erosive osteoarthritis and Sjögren's syndrome.
An unusual, destructive form of erosive hand arthropathy is described in five postmenopausal women. Although early clinical and radiological findings were most in keeping with a diagnosis of erosive osteoarthritis (EOA), hand involvement progressed to a distribution intermediate between EOA and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Although asymptomatic, all patients had features of Sjögren's syndrome (SS...
متن کاملSerum hyaluronic acid as a potential marker with a predictive value for further radiographic progression of hand osteoarthritis.
OBJECTIVE To compare serum levels of hyaluronic acid (HA) between patients with erosive and non-erosive hand osteoarthritis (HOA), and investigate its association with morphological changes and radiographic progression over 2 years. METHODS Fifty-five women with erosive and 33 women with non-erosive HOA were included in this study. All underwent clinical examination, which included assessment...

OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of erosive disease in first carpometacarpal joints (CMCJs) and investigate its clinical impact compared with radiographic thumb base (TB) osteoarthritis (OA). PATIENT AND METHODS Standardized assessments with hand radiographs were performed in participants of two population-based cohort studies in North Staffordshire with hand symptoms lasting ≥1 day in th...
